Yahlive Secures Additional MonacoSAT Capacity from SES

Luxembourg, 17 December, 2015 – SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that SES and YahLive – a company jointly established by SES and Yahsat – have agreed access for YahLive to additional capacity at the 52.0 / 52.5 degrees East orbital positions. This results in additional growth potential, increased reliability and overall attractiveness of the YahLive Direct-To-Home (DTH) neighbourhood, covering the Middle East and North Africa – and extending into Europe.

Through this agreement, SES and YahLive will jointly commercialise twelve MonacoSAT Ku-band transponders.

Ferdinand Kayser, Chief Commercial Officer at SES, commented: “This deal is an example of our ability to make long-lasting positive changes to the satellite broadcasting landscape, bringing significant new capacity to a region in which we see dynamic growth and permitting broadcasters of the vibrant MENA video market to split their content across two co-located satellites.”

Sami Boustany, CEO of YahLive, added: “This deal is a testimony to the maturity of 52.5 degrees East as a regional hot spot. It also brings with it needed backup and expansion capabilities to both YahLive and its customers.”

Back in July 2013 satellite operator SES confirmed an earlier agreement with Space Systems International Monaco for access to its SSI-Monaco satellite’s transponders.

The satellite was launched earlier this year on April 27th, and is orbiting at 52 deg East and is undoubtedly an interesting ‘hot spot’ for the region.

The craft has 38 active Ku-band transponders operating over 3 beams. The Turkmenistan Ministry of Communications is keeping 26 transponders and 12 are leased to SES.

The Abu Dhabi-based YahSat/Yahlive operation is now taking an initial 4 transponders. YahLive itself is a joint-venture between YahSat of Abu Dhabi and SES.  The YahLive segment of transponders operates from 52.5 deg East, and would thus be seen as co-located with the Turkmenistan/Monaco craft.

YahLive’s existing Ku-band transmissions from YahSat 1A are now near-full, and company sources say they are hopeful that the added 4 transponders will add flexibility to its offering.

SpaceX Makes History: Falcon 9 Launches and Lands Vertically

SpaceX completed an historic vertical landing of its Falcon 9 rocket on Monday night — the first time such a feat had been achieved.

The launch and landing in Cape Canaveral, Florida, were the first from the private U.S. spaceflight company since its rocket exploded on liftoff in June.

“Welcome back, baby!” SpaceX founder Elon Musk tweeted after touchdown.

SpaceX had not previously attempted to land a rocket on land, and it marked the firm’s first successful attempt to recover a rocket from an orbital flight.

Previous attempts, all unsuccessful, were attempted on floating landing pads.

The 15-story first stage of rocket — used to propel the payload to 62 miles or so until the second stage takes over — successfully landed on Earth again at a prepared landing zone.

SpaceX has come close to landing a rocket but until now, never actually pulled the feat off. Blue Origin, founded by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, stuck a landing last month — but Musk pointed out that was a suborbital trip, the requirements for which are considerably different.

“It’s a revolutionary moment,” Musk told reporters after the landing. “No one has ever brought a booster, an orbital-class booster, back intact.”

Musk said he ran outside and heard the sonic boom of the returning booster just as it landed; he assumed it had exploded. He learned the happy truth when he went back into Launch Control and saw video of the standing rocket.

“I can’t quite believe it,” he said. “It’s quite shocking.” Musk said the landing appeared close to perfect and the company “could not have asked for a better mission or a better day.”

Creating reusable rockets is important for lowering the cost of space travel, which could make space tourism and a trip to Mars more feasible.

The launch’s payload, 11 ORBCOMM satellites destined to join others in the communications company’s network, was also successfully deployed with no problems.

On June 28, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Dragon spacecraft filled with cargo for the International Space Station exploded a few minutes after lift-off.

The launch was originally scheduled for Sunday night, but was delayed because there was a 10 percent better chance of a successful landing on Monday, according to Musk.
