SSI-MONACO AND VIASAT HELP TO SECURE THE MONTE CARLO RALLY BY SATELLITE

MONTE CARLO., Monaco., March, 18th, 2024 – Viasat, Inc. worked with Space Systems International Monaco (“SSI-Monaco”) to provide crucial emergency communications for the 92nd Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo (25-28 Jan 2024) — and the 26th Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique (31 Jan-7 Feb 2024).

IsatPhone 2s were held to deliver emergency communications by the race marshals from the Automobile Club of Monaco (“ACM”), who manage the rally, as a backup to the existing ACM terrestrial communications.  This satellite telephone service from SSI-Monaco enables to be connected anywhere, at all times. For race organizers, all satellite phones are deployed as backup and throughout the rally route, preventive liaison security tests have shown 100% effectiveness giving the ACM a maximum sense of security for a FIA World Championship event.

The Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo is the season opener of the World Rally Championship’s (WRC) annual calendar. The rally took place across the French Riviera and Southeast France, featuring technical mountain passes, hairpin turns and challenging weather conditions. Viasat services were carried on the iconic 26th Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, which the oldest in the world and only open to cars which previously took part in the Monte Carlo Rally between 1911 and 1983. More than 300 started from locations across Europe with a common finish line – Monte-Carlo.

SSI-Monaco’s President & CEO, Dr. Ilhami Aygun, said “During the Monte Carlo Rally, the communication of the Rally organizers and the race controllers for the safety of the race is crucial. The reliability of IsatPhone 2s – even in the most challenging conditions – play a key role in the backing up of the race and proved 100% coverage. We are proud to partner with the Automobile Club of Monaco to provide safety communications with Viasat.”

Andy Kessler, Vice President, Viasat Enteprise, said “This rally is an awe-inspiring event with thousands of spectators in one of the most iconic places in the world. That means every detail has to be managed with precision. We’re delighted to be working with SSI- Monaco to provide resilient communications so the organizers can stay connected throughout, and make sure the event is one of the best yet.”

SSI-INMARSAT PROVIDING EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE MONTE CARLO RALLY

MONTE CARLO RALLY SAFETY SECURED BY SATELLITES
Race commissaires used IsatPhone 2s from Inmarsat and SSI-Monaco

5 February 2021
The 89th running of the Monte Carlo rally from 21 to 24 of January 2021, won by Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in their Toyota Yaris, saw driver safety enhanced by SSI-Monaco and Inmarsat, the world leader in global, mobile satellite communications.

Inmarsat IsatPhone 2s delivered emergency communications for the race commissaires from the Automobile Club of Monaco, who manage the rally. This satellite telephone service from SSI-Monaco and Inmarsat enabled the officials to be connected anywhere, at all times.

“The determining factor in the Monte Carlo rally organisers choosing Inmarsat and SSI-Monaco was the reliability of the services, which are critical for this event and the ability of the safety teams to be connected at all times across the race route to safeguard the competitors,” said Todd McDonell, president of Inmarsat Global Government. “Inmarsat was honoured to be selected for this role with our partner SSI-Monaco and it continues to demonstrate the flexibility of our services through the sheer variety of activities that rely on ubiquitous, reliable satellite connectivity that we deliver worldwide.”

The rally route took in several parts of the south of France as well as the principality of Monaco. The use of satellite phones ensured that connectivity was never in question in both isolated rural areas as well as urban locations where large numbers of mobile phone users could restrict mobile phone network accessibility.

“During the Monte Carlo Rally, the communication of the Rally organisers and the race controllers for the safety of the race is crucial, especially in the mountainous areas where other types of communications are almost non-existent,” emphasised SSI-Monaco’s President & CEO, Dr. Ilhami Aygun. “The reliability of Inmarsat services and IsatPhone 2s, even in the most challenging conditions, play a key role in the smooth running of the race. We are proud to partner with the Automobile Club of Monaco to provide safety communications via Inmarsat.”

ENDS

Notes to Editors

The 89th Monte-Carlo Rally was the opening round of the 2021 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Since 2014, it has been organised around Gap (Hautes-Alpes) – Sebastien Ogier’s birthplace – as well as in the neighbouring departments of Alpes de Haute-Provence, Drôme and Isère. More than 85 per cent of the route has been changed this year to pose a fresh challenge to the drivers and the resulting 2021 programme is a brand new mix of tests, alternating classic stages and new routes. The Organising Committee at the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) played a major role in this new approach and the grand finale took place, as always, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Then the event will conclude with a celebration at the Prize Ceremony in Monte-Carlo, for the 110th anniversary of the oldest rally in the world. Images are available here.

Axiom Space and SSI-Monaco signed an MOU to Send Monaco Resident to Space

Axiom Space (www.axiomspace.com) and SSI-Monaco (www.ssi-monaco.com) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), agreeing to cooperate toward training one or more citizens or residents of Monaco as professional or private astronauts, and to fly them on an orbital space mission. The flight would make the Principality on the French Riviera the 19th sovereign nation to send an astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).

“We are thrilled to partner with SSI-Monaco to expand the global presence in low-Earth orbit,” said Axiom Space CEO Michael T. Suffredini. “Axiom’s unique ability to build indigenous astronaut selection and training capability to NASA standards will accelerate the development of Monaco’s plans for human spaceflight and space research. We look forward to Monaco joining the human spaceflight community and substantial progress toward Axiom’s vision of making living and working in space commonplace.”

Once trained according to Axiom procedures, Monaco’s astronaut(s) will be eligible for official assignment to ISS missions. The agreement additionally covers the possibility that the mission will instead fly to Axiom Station. The parties also agreed to study the long-term possibilities of space tourism in Monaco and a potential “Monaco Space Module” to be attached to Axiom Station – the world’s first commercial space station – which is set to be constructed while attached to the ISS and later separate and operate independently.

Dr. Ilhami Aygun, President and CEO, SSI-Monaco, said: “In addition of being an honor for our company, this collaboration is a great step for Monaco to establish further its role in the international space community. Axiom is composed of all the great people who contributed to the success of the ISS missions, and now that the human spaceflights tend towards privately trained astronauts, we are proud to contribute to such prestigious project with the DNA of Monaco.”

The expansion of Monaco’s space activities into the rarefied milieu of human spaceflight is aimed at conducting fruitful experiments and data collection in Earth orbit, and fostering public enthusiasm for space, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Alongside Suffredini, who managed the ISS program at NASA from 2005 to 2015, Houston-based Axiom’s leadership team was collectively involved in every ISS mission from the program’s inception. Under the terms of the MOU, it will define specific mission profiles and assign Monaco’s professional astronaut(s) to the first suitable flight consistent with ISS program structure.

NASA’s 60th Anniversary Celebrated with Enthusiasm in Monaco

NASA’s 60th Anniversary Celebrated with Enthusiasm in Monaco during Thanksgiving with Legendary Astronauts

Under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Embassy of Monaco in Washington D.C. assembled respected NASA alumni from the United States and France – including the second man to set foot on the moon, astronaut Buzz Aldrin – for a week of events focusing on the future of air and space travel.

NASA legends from the US space shuttle program — including Captain Robert “Hoot” Gibson, former NASA Administrator General Charles Bolden, Dr. George “Pinky” Nelson, and pioneering woman astronaut, Dr. Rhea Seddon, as well as American space-walk record holder and veteran of three Space Shuttle missions and one ISS mission, Captain Michael López-Alegria, and aerospace experts Mr. Guy Beutelschies from Lockheed Martin, and Dr. Ilhami Aygun, president and CEO of SSI- MonacoSat – gathered to mark the agency’s 60th anniversary and to kick off a space forum (www.MonacoEventsUSA.com) and special screening of Discovery’s documentary “Above and Beyond: NASA’s Journey to Tomorrow” from Academy Award nominee, Rory Kennedy.

At a press conference, the event’s organizer, Monaco’s Ambassador to the United States Maguy Maccario Doyle said the gathering highlighted the Principality’s historical and visionary interest in aviation, aerospace technology and space exploration, given that SSI-Monaco, with partner Thales Alenia Space, launched its first communications satellite MonacoSat-1 with SpaceX’s Falcon9 launcher into geostationary transfer orbit on April 27, 2015 and that a second satellite, MonacoSat-2, is being planned with an expected launch date by 2021-22.

“The Government of Monaco is committed to inspire the public and young people on the importance of space opportunities, in terms of research for the protection of the planet, its future, and that of humanity,” said Maccario Doyle.

To underscore this commitment, Houston-based Axiom Space (www.axiomspace.com) and SSI-Monaco (www.ssi-monaco.com) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), agreeing to cooperate toward training one or more citizens or residents of Monaco as professional or private astronauts, and to fly them on an orbital space mission.
