Axiom Space and SSI-Monaco signed an MOU to Send Monaco Resident to Space

Axiom Space (www.axiomspace.com) and SSI-Monaco (www.ssi-monaco.com) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), agreeing to cooperate toward training one or more citizens or residents of Monaco as professional or private astronauts, and to fly them on an orbital space mission. The flight would make the Principality on the French Riviera the 19th sovereign nation to send an astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).

“We are thrilled to partner with SSI-Monaco to expand the global presence in low-Earth orbit,” said Axiom Space CEO Michael T. Suffredini. “Axiom’s unique ability to build indigenous astronaut selection and training capability to NASA standards will accelerate the development of Monaco’s plans for human spaceflight and space research. We look forward to Monaco joining the human spaceflight community and substantial progress toward Axiom’s vision of making living and working in space commonplace.”

Once trained according to Axiom procedures, Monaco’s astronaut(s) will be eligible for official assignment to ISS missions. The agreement additionally covers the possibility that the mission will instead fly to Axiom Station. The parties also agreed to study the long-term possibilities of space tourism in Monaco and a potential “Monaco Space Module” to be attached to Axiom Station – the world’s first commercial space station – which is set to be constructed while attached to the ISS and later separate and operate independently.

Dr. Ilhami Aygun, President and CEO, SSI-Monaco, said: “In addition of being an honor for our company, this collaboration is a great step for Monaco to establish further its role in the international space community. Axiom is composed of all the great people who contributed to the success of the ISS missions, and now that the human spaceflights tend towards privately trained astronauts, we are proud to contribute to such prestigious project with the DNA of Monaco.”

The expansion of Monaco’s space activities into the rarefied milieu of human spaceflight is aimed at conducting fruitful experiments and data collection in Earth orbit, and fostering public enthusiasm for space, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Alongside Suffredini, who managed the ISS program at NASA from 2005 to 2015, Houston-based Axiom’s leadership team was collectively involved in every ISS mission from the program’s inception. Under the terms of the MOU, it will define specific mission profiles and assign Monaco’s professional astronaut(s) to the first suitable flight consistent with ISS program structure.

NASA’s 60th Anniversary Celebrated with Enthusiasm in Monaco

NASA’s 60th Anniversary Celebrated with Enthusiasm in Monaco during Thanksgiving with Legendary Astronauts

Under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Embassy of Monaco in Washington D.C. assembled respected NASA alumni from the United States and France – including the second man to set foot on the moon, astronaut Buzz Aldrin – for a week of events focusing on the future of air and space travel.

NASA legends from the US space shuttle program — including Captain Robert “Hoot” Gibson, former NASA Administrator General Charles Bolden, Dr. George “Pinky” Nelson, and pioneering woman astronaut, Dr. Rhea Seddon, as well as American space-walk record holder and veteran of three Space Shuttle missions and one ISS mission, Captain Michael López-Alegria, and aerospace experts Mr. Guy Beutelschies from Lockheed Martin, and Dr. Ilhami Aygun, president and CEO of SSI- MonacoSat – gathered to mark the agency’s 60th anniversary and to kick off a space forum (www.MonacoEventsUSA.com) and special screening of Discovery’s documentary “Above and Beyond: NASA’s Journey to Tomorrow” from Academy Award nominee, Rory Kennedy.

At a press conference, the event’s organizer, Monaco’s Ambassador to the United States Maguy Maccario Doyle said the gathering highlighted the Principality’s historical and visionary interest in aviation, aerospace technology and space exploration, given that SSI-Monaco, with partner Thales Alenia Space, launched its first communications satellite MonacoSat-1 with SpaceX’s Falcon9 launcher into geostationary transfer orbit on April 27, 2015 and that a second satellite, MonacoSat-2, is being planned with an expected launch date by 2021-22.

“The Government of Monaco is committed to inspire the public and young people on the importance of space opportunities, in terms of research for the protection of the planet, its future, and that of humanity,” said Maccario Doyle.

To underscore this commitment, Houston-based Axiom Space (www.axiomspace.com) and SSI-Monaco (www.ssi-monaco.com) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), agreeing to cooperate toward training one or more citizens or residents of Monaco as professional or private astronauts, and to fly them on an orbital space mission. “This will be the second such forum initiated by the Embassy. The first, in 2016, premiered “The Last Man on the Moon” (http://monacodc.org/Nov10), and underscores the Principality’s interests in aerospace technology and exploration, given that SSI-Monaco, with partner Thales Alenia Space, launched its first communications satellite MonacoSat-1 with SpaceX’s Falcon9 launcher into geostationary transfer orbit on April 27, 2015 (https://www.ssi-monaco.com/monacosat/birth-of-monacosat/launch/). A second satellite MonacoSat-2 is being planned by SSI-MonacoSat with an expected launch date by 2021-22.”

“I am honoured that the Embassy has chosen to screen “Above and Beyond” during this prestigious gathering of NASA astronauts and others who have dedicated their lives to understanding more about our planet and the world around us,” says Kennedy. “Our goal in making this film was to present a record of the great accomplishments of NASA over the past 6 decades, and to look forward to its next great missions.  From landing rovers on Mars to measuring the health of our planet, NASA’s work is not only awe-inspiring but essential to our future well-being.”

In Above and Beyond: NASA’s Journey To Tomorrow, Rory Kennedy commemorates the Apollo program’s remarkable journey to the Moon, and the creativity of those who worked to achieve it, and most importantly, what we choose to do with our heritage of achievement,” said Dr. Stofan, the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Lockheed Martin has a long legacy of supporting NASA’s deep space exploration, including every mission to Mars since 1971. From the building of the world’s first weather satellite to the current fleet of GPS satellites, Lockheed Martin Space innovations provide critical communications, science, navigation, and weather data to the world. SSI-MONACOSAT (partner of Inmarsat) will provide the communications for the Monaco Globes Series

1st Monaco Globe Series

1-8 June 2018

IMOCAS DISEMBARK IN MONACO
Official teaser video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iEBODnTpXg&t=2s

With IMOCA class and Race Committee representatives and skippers in Monaco to see the facilities, the Yacht Club de Monaco took full advantage to unveil details of the Monaco Globe Series, a qualifier for the next Vendée Globe.

Being organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco from 1-8 June 2018, it is the first non-stop double-hander offshore race around the Western Mediterranean and will depart 3rd June.

As these boats rarely come to the Med, the event will start with a two-day prologue in the form of runs or fleet races on an inshore course so sailing fans can see them in action. “Four years after the inauguration of our new building, the Yacht Club de Monaco intends to ramp up its sailing policy, to give it a new international dimension, with major events like the Monaco Globe Series. In line with our Club’s missions, and part of Monaco’s Capital of Yachting ambitions, we want to play our part in the Principality’s appeal as a destination,” explains YCM General Secretary, Bernard d’Alessandri.

Unprecedented route round the Western Mediterranean

On a 1,300nm course round emblematic landmarks in the Western Mediterranean (Sardinia, Sicily and Balearic Islands), the Monaco Globe Series offers a sprint comparable to the 110m hurdles, with obstacles like the Strait of Bonifacio, not to mention all the vessels from fishing boats to pleasure boats and cargo ships, always very numerous at this time of year. Teams will need to be extra vigilant, with back-to-back manoeuvres likely, and expect a range of weather conditions. Four days and four nights of sailing look set to be very intense!

10 boats on the start

Although the closing date for registrations is not until 1st April 2016, six boats have already confirmed their participation.

Leading the field is Pierre Casiraghi, Yacht Club de Monaco Vice-President and the man behind the project, sailing with Boris Herrmann on Malizia II. “It’s a real pleasure for us to host such exceptional boats and organise an event like this which I know will leave its mark on our Club. It’s important to inspire our youngsters by hosting meetings like this one, with an educational aspect to it. We also want everyone to discover the Mediterranean and would like to thank our friends, the clubs Circolo della Vela Sicilia, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Club Maritimo Mahon who spontaneously agreed to be involved with this race,” commented Pierre Casiraghi. He recalled that for the last ten years, the YCM has helped run the Palermo- Montecarlo, a 500nm offshore race organised by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia.

“We are delighted to be associated with this new race. And I am very impatient to see this fleet in the Gulf of Mondello. Last year for the Palermo-Montecarlo was the first time we saw Malizia II led by Boris. With two wins under his belt in 2013 and 2014, Pierre may have a little advantage over the other competitors as he knows the course well, even if the route is in the opposite direction to the Palermo-Montecarlo,” said Agostino Randazzo, President of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, Challenger of Record of the 36th America’s Cup.

It will also count on a new generation of rising stars like Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée) and Paul Meilhat (SMA), a strong candidate for the Vendée Globe 2020 having come 2nd in the last Transat Jacques Vabre. “The Monaco Globes Series is the first event of the championship, in the lead up to the Vendée Globe 2020 which I would love to be part of. It’s important as it is the start of the next Vendee’s history. This will be my first IMOCA race in the Mediterranean. Wind conditions are always difficult, strategy is key, particularly the Corsica passage and Sardinia; as a competitor, we’re looking at lots of manoeuvres. It’s going to be intense – it’s going to be fun!”

Alongside the sporting challenge and chance to rack up points for the Vendée Globe, the event is a great public relations opportunity, being in the Mediterranean, for contestants like Paul Meilhat (SMA) and Fabrice Amedeo (Newrest – Art et Fenêtres).

Women will also be on the start with Alexia Barrier (4myPlanet), a newcomer to the IMOCA class, and Isabelle Joschke, represented by Alain Gauthier. “Isabelle is a great believer in diversity and has her sights set on the Vendée Globe 2020. We are also delighted to be coming to the Mediterranean on a tactically difficult route. I don’t know yet if I will be at her side but very happy to come to Monaco.”

Mediterranean in the spotlight

Keen to share this unique event with the maximum number of people, SSI-MonacoSat (partner of Inmarsat) is providing its satellite video and voice communication service via the Inmarsat satellite network free of charge to teams so they can broadcast photos and videos. It is a great opportunity, not only for them to share their race and the beauty of the course, but also testify to the state of the marine environment. The course traverses the Pelagos Sanctuary and skippers are likely to see many marine mammals and cetaceans that call the Med home.

Provisional programme:

Friday 1st June 2018

Exhibition day for teams and their sponsors
